The International Workshop on Frontiers in Applied Computational Electromagnetics, FACE, was a two-day stimulating event of scientific, cultural and social programs for the participants and their guests. This workshop was scheduled for the week following IMS 2006 in San Francisco and was timed to coincide with the sixty-fifth birthday of Professor Wolfgang J.R. Hoefer who has attained the rank of Professor Emeritus on July 1, 2006.

The first day of the workshop began with technical presentations by leading international experts in Computational Electromagnetics, Microwave R&D, Modelling and Optimization; followed by an invited keynote presentation, In Search for the Intangible – 40 Years of Research in Electromagnetics, by Professor Hoefer. The non-technical highlight of the event was a two-piano recital, guest artists Helmut Brauss and Diana Lawton performed works by Mozart and Saint-Saëns. The first day was concluded with a reception and a celebration banquet at the University Club.

The second day filled with technical presentations along the theme of FACE. High quality papers in the areas of Modelling of Microwave Components, TLM Modelling and Analysis, and Modelling of Antenna Structures were presented. The workshop was concluded with a session on approaches for developing an open-source CEM package. In summary, the workshop was a joyful celebration for Professor Hoefer entering a new era in his professional career as well as a successful launch pad for open-source computational electromagnetics.

Poman P. M. So and Jens Bornemann Workshop Co-Chairs FACE 2006.
